While the world crisis deepens slowly, as a vengeful force, more and more smartphones are being sold, providing some encouragement to the mobile industry.
Last Thursday, the consulting firm Canalys released a report about the global smartphones distribution during the third quarter of 2008: the market received 39,9 million units, an increase of 28 percent from last year. Those almost 40 million smartphones represent 13% of the total mobile phone market Li-12B , Klic-7004. But, logically, all the makers are not happy in the same way. The big winner was Apple that caught a healthy portion of the market share, surpassing RIM (Research In Motion, Blackberry maker). However, both companies caught some share of Nokia¡¯s market.
The iPhone 3G release by the middle of last July and its availability in more countries were the advantages of Apple to gain over 17% of the market share (although good results were expected, the figures have surpassed the expectations ). On the other hand, the Blackberry maker has now a 15% Minolta NP-500 of market share, which is not bad at all considering the figures of last year when the company only had 10,6% of market share.
The other company that gained market share by cutting the Nokia¡¯s share was HTC, which makes strong devices with the mobile version of the Microsoft¡¯s operating system. Although Nokia still being the top maker by a comfortable margin (38,9%), its market share decreased 12.5% from the previous year. Canalys suggests a reason: the quarter coincided with a transition from the old phones to the new ones.
